The Health Ministry at Guardian Angels is committed to enhancing our community’s quality of life by helping to improve the health awareness of our congregation. We emphasize wellness and preventive medicine in a safe, spiritual environment while empowering the people of our congregation to take control of their own health care. We plan various educational events throughout the year for the congregation, school, and community to attend.
We work in collaboration with Henry Ford Health System’s Faith Community Nursing Network and our lead Faith Community Nurse, Shawn Bennis, MSN, RN, FCN.
If you have questions or are interested in being part of this ministry, please contact the parish office by calling (248) 588-1222 or email Shawn directly at shawnbennis2010@gmail.com. No healthcare experience is necessary; just an open heart to helping others!

What is High Blood Pressure? (hypertension)
High blood pressure is a common disease which blood flows through blood vessels (arteries) at higher than normal pressures.

Lung Health
Asthma (AZ-ma) is a chronic (long-term) lung disease that inflames and narrows the airways. Asthma causes recurring periods of wheezing (a whistling sound when you breathe), chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing. The coughing often occurs at night or early in the morning.
Asthma affects people of all ages, but it most often starts during childhood. In the United States, more than 25 million people are known to have asthma. About 7 million of these people are children.
COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary (PULL-mun-ary) disease, is a progressive disease that makes it hard to breathe. “Progressive” means the disease gets worse over time.
COPD can cause coughing that produces large amounts of mucus (a slimy substance), wheezing, shortness or breath, chest tightness, and other symptoms.
Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of COPD. Most people who have COPD smoke or used to smoke. Long-term exposure to other lung irritants–such as air pollution, chemical fumes, or dust–also may contribute to COPD.
You may find some of this information helpful in managing your lung disease.

Nutrition
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states 98 million Americans have obesity. Between 1980 and 2010, the percentage of people with obesity doubled among adults and tripled among children. Since 2010, rates have been steady, even declined among young children, but too many people still have obesity. Obesity reduces quality of life and increases individuals’ risk for other diseases including diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers. Obesity severely impacts the U.S. economy, approximately $147 billion in annual health care costs.
The Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity (DNPAO) supports healthy eating, active living, and obesity prevention by creating healthy child care centers, hospitals, schools, and worksites; building capacity of state health departments and national organizations; and, concluding research, surveillance and evaluation studies.
